Introduction

CIPP, or cured-in-place pipe, has become a pipe repair solution that you can depend on for the long haul. With ever-changing technology, CIPP continually improves. One such improvement is the use of UV to expedite the curing process and get your pipes up and running in a matter of hours.

What Is UV Cured-in-Place Pipe?

What Is UV Cured-in-Place Pipe?

UV CIPP takes all of the benefits of CIPP and adds an LED light process that really escalates the value of the service. When you have a damaged pipe that needs repairs, we use a flexible resin-coated tube that can easily be inserted into the pipe. The tube is installed and adheres to the pipe and then goes through a curing process. Sometimes that curing process can take quite a bit of time.

With UV technology, though, we can cure the resin on the tube far faster. Where curing the resin on CIPP typically takes around 24 hours, the addition of UV greatly reduces that time. Now, instead of waiting a full day to be back in business, you may only be down for a few hours. The latest UV technology allows us to cure 1 meter per minute. That means if there are 7 meters, we can complete curing in 7 minutes. That’s an astronomical difference in timing to completion!

How Does UV Cured in Place Pipe Work?

How Does UV Cured in Place Pipe Work?

This advanced technology is designed to help you make quick and lasting repairs without invasive practices. Industrial and commercial sites are infamous for pipeline structures that are difficult to access. They are hidden deep within the ground – perhaps even beneath streets and parking garages in some cases.

With UV CIPP, we don’t have to dig. All work can be accomplished using either an access point or a manhole, depending on what is available. How does it work? Here is a quick look at the process:

  1. We complete an initial video inspection of the pipeline
  2. We determine the best plan of action for repairs
  3. Insert the CIPP tube where appropriate
  4. Use UV light technology to speed up the curing process
  5. Complete a final video inspection to ensure repairs are complete

We will also clean the pipe, or at least the area that needs to be repaired. This allows us to provide a clean, clear surface for the resin of the tube to adhere to.

There are very few exceptions in repairs that you can make with UV CIPP. It can be used for sewer, water, gas, chemicals, and even heating pipelines. It can work for any need and any pipe material.

What kind of pipes does your facility have? UV CIPP can be used for all of these and more:

  • PVC
  • Steel
  • Clay
  • Cast-iron
  • Orangeburg
  • Concrete
  • Corrugated Metal

It’s almost a universal solution for pipeline repairs. Did you know that you can even use UV CIPP to work on large-diameter pipelines and vertical pipeline structures? If you’re concerned about limitations, you won’t find very many of those here.

When Can You NOT Use UV CIPP?

When Can You NOT Use UV CIPP?

While UV CIPP is almost always an ideal solution that requires absolutely no digging or trenching, there are some exceptions when you can use it. UV CIPP is suitable for almost all pipeline repairs or proactive maintenance. When you have a break, crack, or leak on the above materials, you can count on CIPP. When a repair is severe, though, you may not be able to use CIPP.

For example, we cannot use CIPP on a collapsed pipeline. In this scenario, the collapsed pipe will need to be completely replaced. This is because CIPP needs an existing pipe to adhere to, even if the pipe is cracked or broken. If the pipe has collapsed, there is nothing for the CIPP tube to adhere to.

The other limitation is for heavily corroded pipelines. You can use CIPP for some corrosion and rust, but if the pipeline is so corroded that the structure is in jeopardy, it is not a good idea to use CIPP here. Doing so might cause the pipeline to collapse. It would be much better to replace the jeopardized portion and start fresh.

Other than that, you can use UV cured-in-place pipe for nearly any repair or maintenance need.
